Dear Friend,

Winning is not the only way to make a difference.

Thousands of volunteers working tirelessly throughout the district delivered a message of opportunity, of change, and of hope. We did it with integrity, honesty, and in the tradition of true democratic principles.

I want to thank every one of my volunteers who walked and phoned and blogged from the beginning of this race to the bitter end. You inspired me, you humbled me, you gave me hope for America.

We have been made stronger by your participation. We have new friends and new ideas. We knocked on doors that closed in our faces and knocked on doors that opened to let us in.

I am indebted to you all. I consider you my family and I will take your love and encouragement with me to whatever new opportunities await. We must continue our work.

Debbie Cook

Former Republican Congressman Paul "Pete" McCloskey endorsed Mayor Debbie Cook for Congress this week in her race against Dana Rohrabacher.

"What is desperately needed in the next Congress are individuals of great integrity with fresh thoughts from outside the Beltway, and who also possess a willingness to set aside partisanship and rigid ideology," said McCloskey. "I am confident that she will help bring courtesy and thoughtful compromise back to Washington, and maybe even help restore some of the faith in our system of government that all of us have lost at least a little bit of over the last few years. Dana Rohrabacher is part of the problem."

McCloskey played a key role in former Republican Congressman Richard Pombo's 2006 loss to Jerry McNerney. McCloskey ran a primary race against Pombo, who like Dana Rohrabacher was close friends with Jack Abramoff. McCloskey's campaign slogan was "Restore Ethics to Congress." After losing to Pombo, McCloskey endorsed McNerney.

From the OC Weekly:
Rambunctious real-estate developers and their stooges in the local Orange County media love to celebrate massive, publicly subsidized but privately owned developments and to attack critics as unreasonable leftists.

But the poster face for reasonable, responsible development - especially ones that don't rob the public of parks and other valuable open space - belongs to Debbie Cook, the popular mayor of Huntington Beach. A rare breed in OC politics, Cook is articulate, feisty on her cherished issues and yet still principled. In 1990, as a concerned citizen, she helped enact a city charter amendment that required politicians and their real-estate-developer contributors to seek voter approval before they could commercialize any public park. She has also been instrumental in preserving a portion of the Bolsa Chica Mesa from overdevelopment.

This year, Cook, a Democrat, is willing to gamble her political capital to challenge the gorilla of the OC Republican Party: Congressman Dana Rohrabacher, the 10-time incumbent who is described by some (okay, by us) as an angry, rambling hodgepodge of steaming partisan flatulence and dubious associations. A Cook victory would give the 46th Congressional District (Huntington Beach, Costa Mesa, Seal Beach and portions of coastal Long Beach) a fresh voice on ethics, energy and the environment. Oh, and unlike Rohrabacher, she'd probably never lobby for the Taliban. - OC Weekly, Oct. 10
