If you answer yes to having taken the sat essay, you are then required to report the “highest combined essay score.” it wouldn’t make sense to require reporting of the essay score even if it is not among the test sittings for the “past sat scores you wish to report.” Before test day, they can call customer service to have it added to their registration. Students registered for the sat with essay can cancel the essay portion if they choose to. Now, we'll cover whether you should generally take the sat/act if it's optional for the schools you're applying to below, but it's worth mentioning that a judge has banned the uc schools from using the sat/act at all. Because the new 1600 sat essay is optional, students are under the impression that they do not have to take it.
That means that if you don’t take the sat essay at the time of your general sat and later decide you want an sat essay score for your applications, you’ll have to retake the entire sat. Decide whether you’re going to take the optional act writing test. The sat essay and act writing test will also not be used at all for admissions (source).
In october 2019 i scored 680 ebrw and 800 math, but had a 15 on the essay in august 2020 i took it without the essay and scored 730 ebrw and 790 math. This means that my superscore would be 1530, but if i choose to send it i would also have to include the bad essay. Starting in june 2021, students taking the sat will no longer be able to take the sat essay exam (unless it’s part of an sat school days requirement).

You can change to or from the sat with essay without a change fee, but you do pay the price difference between the two tests if you’re switching to the sat with essay. Students applying for fall admission must take the act plus writing, sat (taken prior to march 2016) or sat with essay (taken march 2016 or later) no later than december of their senior year to ensure their application receives prompt and careful consideration. If even one school you’re interested in requires the sat essay, then you should take it, regardless of any other factors.
There is no way to take just the sat essay by itself, so if you take the sat without the essay and then, later on, realize you need an essay score for a school you’re applying to, you will have to retake the entire test. While some colleges don’t consider your sat essay while evaluating college applications, many do. It used to be that every student of mine would write the essay section on the sat or writing component (the essay) on the act.
If you take the sat without essay, your application will be incomplete and you won't get admitted. This includes your gpa, your college essay, awards and achievements, references, and any extracurricular activities you include. However, if you are a prep expert student, you must take the new sat essay.
There is no hard and fast “rule” to determine whether or not you should submit test scores, as it depends on your academic profile, the remaining contents of your application, and the profile of the college to which you are applying. It’s important to keep in mind that you cannot take the sat essay without taking the general sat. If the college does not require the test, then generally no, it will not hurt your application.
It is unlikely that scores from tests taken after december will arrive in time for our review process. Not being able to take the sat essay is most impactful for students who’d planned to use their essay scores to. This gives you the maximum amount of options for schools without having to worry about going back later to take the essay portion of the test.
